RAPE
It's not just women who are raped. Both sexes frequently and unfairly fall victim to this abuse.
You've been forced to have sex against your will and your mind is racing with what to do next. It's difficult to know what to do and who to go to first.
Is the attacker too young to be charged with rape or indecent assault?
Anyone from the age of 10 can be charged with rape or indecent assault.
Should you go to the Police?
It may be the last place you feel you want to go, but for the best chance of the attacker being caught and punished, you really need to go to the Police Station asap after the rape. If you do go to the Police straight after the attack, you'll need to have a medical examination. It's important you don't wash and you should stay in the same clothes, so there's a good chance of getting as much forensic evidence as possible. The Police will treat you with respect and you will be anonymous throughout the process.
The court case
Once the case gets to court you will be supported either by a police officer or a rape counsellor. You will be both a witness and the victim when the case comes to court. Again you will be protected from the rapist by screens and from inappropriate questioning by the defence. This is especially related to your previous sexual history, unless you have had a relationship with the accused.
It is possible for your partner or husband to rape you and you can report them to the police.
