Going on holiday and you don’t have a car well how are you going to get there? You’ll have to use trains and boats and planes.

For travelling in the UK you have a wide range of choices from flying to walking but the majority of journeys made by public transport will be made by bus, coach or rail. For long distances most people will choose rail because it is probably more comfortable than other methods and it is also quicker.

If you are under 26 then you will be able to apply for a young persons railcard www.youngpersons-railcard.co.uk this website will give you all the info you want about the scheme and once you get one it will enable you to get reductions on your rail fares. If you are able to book in advance both your outward and return journey then you will be able to get a significant reduction on the walk on cost. For example London to Glasgow can cost you anything from £15.50 return to over a £100 you pays your money and takes your choice. This is very similar to the way in which the low cost airlines work.

The Government is developing a combined data base for all means of public transport but it isn't all on the net yet but check it out. The organisation is Traveline 0870 608 2 608 or www.traveline.org.uk.

For railway information telephone 08457 484950 for national rail enquiries or you can try their website. This site also shows details of major engineering works around the country and their effect on your journey.

Like the railways the coach company National Express, by far and away the largest long distance coach operator in the UK, offers discount cards for those aged 16 to 25 plus a range of other offers which will get you to most of Europe. To get more details contact their website by clicking here. In general you will find that coach fares considerably lower than rail fares but the journey times may well be longer.

If your off to some of the more far flung parts of the UK you will need to look at ferries and or planes to get you there. With planes you will need to check with your local airport to see if they have flights to your chosen destination. If they are unable to help you may have to try other airports in the area.

Ferries are different as there are fewer companies to deal with www.seaview.co.uk has masses of info about which companies go where except for the ferries going to the Scottish West Coast Islands. For those you will need to check with Caledonian MacBrayne Ltd

With this information you should be able to get pretty near to whereever you want in the UK. Even if you do have to do the last few miles by taxi or you could always walk.
