Who gets it?
Early Education is available to all 4 year olds many 3 year olds and from September 2004 all 3 year olds. The minimum entitlement is 5 x 2.5 hour sessions per week for a minimum of 33 weeks a year.

Who provides the education?
This education is provided in a whole range of different settings from playgroups to schools and is free. You may be asked to pay a contribution if you send your child for longer than the 2.5 hours or if the school charges fees which are more than the Nursery Education Grant. (this would usually be an independent school)

How do I get my child in?
The best thing to do is look round your area and speak to other parents to see what is available and which provider is considered to be the best. When you have decided which one you want your child to go to then contact the provider and get their application forms. As many providers have waiting lists you might need to apply up to a year before your child’s third birthday.

How is it paid for?
At the moment children are funded from term in which they become four and in some areas the term following their third birthday. Many providers will offer places to two year olds but you will have to pay for these.

My child has additional needs will they be able to get this education?
Yes, all groups will try to take your child and support may be available to help your child take part in these sessions. Make sure you let the group know when you first contact them.

Can I get involved?
Many providers will want you to become involved both with the children through a rota or through the management committee, fund raising and the general administration of the group. You will need to check and find out their policies.

What will my child be doing?
Your child will be following the foundation stage of the national curriculum. This is not as formal as when they start school proper but is none the less carefully structured to get your child ready for learning when they start school.
