It seems odd to think that only 60 years ago Britain had an Empire that spread round the world and many thousands of Britons spoke languages as varied as Swahili , Pidgin and Hindi. Yet now fewer and fewer people are learning a Modern Foreign Language. Most schools only offer French and German with few offering Spanish.
You might not want to do French or German to 16 because you hate the subject and in any case everyone speaks English. Well that isn’t true but that isn’t the reason for carrying on with a foreign language.
This country is part of the EU and as such you have the right to be educated, work and live anywhere in the EU. If you decide that you want to work abroad, or your company wants to move you to Germany or Estonia you may well find that having a language other than English will help you get or keep a job.
Just to give you some idea of the situation in Europe you only have to look at the rules that were in place for the EU itself. If you want to work for them you will need to speak your own language plus at least one other EU language.
The other thing to consider is that many people in Europe, especially younger people from the smaller countries will speak at least two languages other than their own. Many young Poles speak, Polish, Russian, German, English and French. If you are competing for jobs against people with these skills you may find that the employer will prefer them to you.
