Fed up with using public transport?

Want to learn to drive?

When can you do it?

14+ you can whizz around on an electrically assisted pedal cycle

16+ drive a moped up to 50cc, an invalid carriage, small tractor or mowing machine, pedestrian controlled vehicle and fly a glider

17+ drive a car, motorcycle up to 125cc with output a maximum of 11kw or up to 22kw with maximum weight ratio 0.16 w/kg, a large tractor, small road roller and even fly an aircraft solo!

18+ you can drive a light good vehicle, medium sized lorry and have a commercial pilots licence.

21+ drive a heavy goods vehicle, large road roller, tracked vehicle or large passenger vehicle with a licence.

How do you start?

Complete a provisional licence application form, which is available from the Post Office. Before you pass your test you need to display L plates and have an adult, someone over 21, who has had a full driving licence for at least three years, accompany you while you are learning. The vehicle you use must be insured, taxed and if more than three years old, have an MOT.

Your test will be in two parts a theory test and a practical driving test. To get a full icence you will need to pass both parts. To help with the theory test the AA Website has a free multiple choice mock theory test. Click here to try it out.

BEWARE
If you pass your test and within two years get 6 or more penalty points (only two speeding offences), you will lose your licence, have to start all over again with a provisional licence etc and your points will be transferred to your new licence.
If you're caught driving without a licence, tax or insurance or alone on a provisional licence or whilst disqualified, the insurance company won't cover you if there's an accident.

Info for Bikers

A provisional licence and Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) which gives you basic skills for driving a motorcycle, means you can ride on the road but if you haven't a full licence to drive any other vehicle, you must pass a full test, Accompanied Rider Test (ART) within two years, otherwise you'll be banned for a year.

You can carry a pillion passenger on a moped or motorcycle when you are fully licenced but motorcyclists are restricted to 125cc until they have passed both parts of their driving tests. Yes, you do have to wear a helmet!
