Gay,Lesbian,Bi-Sexual and Transgender


It is thought that 10% of the population are gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender which means that there are about 6 million people who are not straight in the UK

It is illegal for anyone whether, gay or straight, to have sex under the age of sixteen and it is possible that if some over sixteen has sex with someone under the age of consent that they could be prosecuted and find themselves inside and placed on the sex offenders register.

Coming out can be the most difficult time for you and before doing so you may want to talk things over with a trusted friend.

Parliament passed the Civil Partnership Act in 2004 and this came into effect in December 2005. This means that gay couples will be able go through a ceremony similar to marriage and will also give these relationships similar status to those of straight couples with regard to benefits, tax etc. For more information about Civil Partnerships check out our pages.
