| What is Council Tax? |
Council Tax is a property tax paid by most people who live in a property. The amount you pay depends on the value of your property and the level decided by the councils in your area. In Norfolk the county, district and parish councils plus the police authority each raise money through the council tax system. Houses are banded according to their value from the cheapest at A to the most expensive at H.
At the moment there are discussions going on to revalue properties and to reform the whole system.
Watch this space for details of the changes.

| Who has to pay? |
Properties are registered with the district council and unless exempt a person living in the property will be liable to pay. In some cases all the people in the house may be “jointly and severally liable” to pay the tax. If this isn’t the case the person named will be liable for the tax and how they get from the others in the house is up to them. (If you’re in a house like this make sure there is a proper agreement about how the tax will be paid).. If you’re a full time registered student then you won’t have to pay Council Tax but you must register with the council. There are a range of other people who may be exempt from paying but for more information contact your local CAB
