Alcohol and Health

Alcohol

You want to have a drink with your mates, but is it legal?

The good news is you can drink alcohol on private premises as long as you are at least 5 years old!

When can you buy drinks in a pub?

Under 14? You can go into a bar or pub with an adult, if it has a Children’s Certificate, but you can't drink alcohol.

14-16? You can go into a pub but you still can't buy alcohol in bars, restaurants or shops.

16-17? Yippee! You can buy or drink wine, beer, cider or perry with your meal in a hotel, restaurant or part of a pub set aside for eating meals. Sorry ...... you still can't drink spirits.

18+? Make up for lost time. You can buy and drink any alcohol in an off license, pub or restaurant.

Beware!

Maybe you're old enough to buy alcohol but feel sorry for your mate who is under age and decide to buy him a beer? You could get charged, if you buy alcohol for anyone under the age of 18, whether they drink it in a pub, in the street, or wherever, although it's OK for them to drink it on private premises.

OK, the odd drink may be cool, but too much can put yourself and others at risk. How much can you drink, have fun, but still be relatively safe?

Benchmarks are a maximum of 3-4 units per day for men and 2-3 units for women.

Half a pint of ordinary strength lager, beer or cider or one measure of spirit, one alco-pop or one small glass of wine, each contain 1 unit.

Some Indian beers and strong beers like Pils, have nearly 2 units per bottle.

Tennents Super and Special Brew have 4 units per can!

Beware!
If you combine drink and drugs, it's particularly dangerous.
