Food Additives Food AdditivesFood additives have been used for centuries. Salt, sugar and vinegar were among the first and used to preserve foods. In the past 30 years, however, with the advent of processed foods, there has been a massive explosion in the chemical adulteration of foods with additives. Considerable controversy has been associated with the potential threats and possible benefits of food additives. Since 1982 the use of all food additives has been controlled by law, the EU introduced a means of categorising additives, along with more stringent labelling requirements on food products. Pick up a bottle of orange squash, for example, and the label will reveal what additives you're about to consume, for example E102, a synthetic yellow dye called tartrazine. There are a huge number of websites dealing with additives and the effects they can have on you and the food you eat. Below are a selection of those sites available. A google search throws up nearly 2 million sites for you to research. These sites are in no particular order and some are against some are neutral and some are pro you will have to make your own mind up about who to believe and then decide what kinds of food you want to buy.
