Abortion
If you think you are pregnant and want to talk to your doctor about a termination you are entitled to a confidential consultation with a doctor, provided you make it clear that you don’t want your parents to be told. However, a doctor who is unwilling to accept a request for confidentiality can refuse to discuss the matter. If the doctor says they are unwilling to give a confidential consultation, or if you don’t want to go to your family doctor for another reason, you can go to another agency.
Are you too many weeks pregnant to have an abortion?
It's legal up to 24 weeks but most abortions are carried out before 14 weeks.
What sort of abortion will you be offered?
Depends on how quick you get help.
Up to 3 days pregnant?
You can get ECPs, emergency contraceptive pills, during an appointment with your GP, Family Planning clinic and Accident and Emergency Department of the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital. You need to start taking the pills within 3 days of unprotected sex and make two visits to the Clinic, two days apart, plus a post abortion check a week later.
Up to 5 days pregnant?
Sometimes you can have an IUD fitted within 5 days of unproteced sex.
Up to 9 weeks pregnant?
You can have an early medical abortion, known as the RU486 abortion pill. You'll need two visits to the Clinic, two days apart, plus a check-up a week later.
15-19 weeks pregnant?
There's the vacuum aspiration abortion, which is the suction method, carried out in a small treatment room under general anaesthetic and you should be able to go home after a few hours.
17-24 weeks pregnant?
An overnight stay and medical induction may be necessary, which gives a similar experience to a late miscarriage.
19-24 weeks pregnant?
A surgical two stage abortion may be available with a general anaesthetic needed for each stage. You may need to stay in the Clinic or hospital, one or two nights.
What happens to the aborted foetus?
Unless otherwise instructed, staff will cremate all foetal remains.
