1. I'm pregnant and my boss says I can't go to classes or for check ups without losing money. Can they do that?
2. I've just had an interview at a local garage and I didn't get the job, even though I've got better qualifications than the bloke who did. They kept on asking me questions about babies and things. Are they allowed to do that? Could they have been discriminating against me because I'm a woman?
3. I am just about to start a new high school and the dress code says that girls must wear regulation school skirts and that trousers are not permitted. I am a muslim girl and for religious reasons I need to wear my trousers and headscarf. I want to go to this school as everybody else in the area goes there and I want to make friends with people who live close by. I've never had any problems at my other schools.

4. Help! I'm really getting fed up with being abused by the neighbours. Practically everything they say has black b.....d or go home you w..Where do I go to get them to stop.
5. I have to use a wheelchair and recently applied for a position at a local company. I've got really good qualifications but when it came to the debrief after the interview the boss indicated that the only reason I didn't get the job was that he thought the wheelchair would get in the way. This doesn't seem right. Is there anything I can do?
6. As there is age discrimination laws in place now will my boss have to pay me the full National Minimum Wage as I'm only 20?
7. Any other questions about discrimination?

1. I'm pregnant and my boss says I can't go to classes or for check ups without losing money. Can they do that?
No, they can't providing you meet the minimum period of employment requirements, you are entitled to paid time off to keep appointments for antenatal care made on the advice of a doctor, registered midwife or registered health visitor.

Antenatal care is not restricted to medical examinations. For example, it could also include relaxation classes and parent craft classes.

Except for your first appointment you must be prepared to show your employer if requested:

A certificate from a doctor, registered midwife or registered health visitor confirming that you are pregnant and an appointment card or some other document showing that an appointment has been made.

For more advice you could contact your localCitizens Advice Bureau or check out these websites www.adviceguide.org.uk, www.tiger.gov.uk. If they continue to prevent you going you may have a case that you could take to an Employment Tribual. The equal opportunities Commission may be able to give you help and support. Yes, it is possible that they were discriminating against you, but it is sometimes difficult to prove. As an applicant for a job you are covered by the sex discrimination act and as such you are able to apply to an Employment Tribunal for compensation. To start this process you will need to send a copy of the SD 74 questionnaire to the employer asking why they discriminated against you. You must do this within 3 months of the date of the interview (89 days). You can get a copy of the form either by writing to or by downloading from:

I want to go to this school as everybody else in the area goes there and I want to make friends with people who live close by. I've never had any problems at my other schools.

Before this becomes a big problem for you and your family it might be an idea to talk to head of your present school and get them to talk to your new head. It might be that the high school has not had a muslim girl before and needs to be informed of your religious needs. If this does not sort out the problem your parents or Imam could write to the chair of governors of the school explaining your needs and ask them to look at the school's dress code, their address should be readily available from the school. They could also contact the County Council Education Department at County Hall address your letter to the Director of Education, County Hall, Martineau Lane, Norwich NR1 2DH or tel. 08448 008020 and ask for the Director of Education. If going through the education channels fails then your parents may want to contact the

4. Help! I'm really getting fed up with being abused by the neighbours. Practically everything they say has black b.....d or go home you w..Where do I go to get them to stop.
This kind of abuse is illegal and you can go to the police and complain. The police however have discretion in this area and may not feel inclined to intervene. If you rent your house or flat you could ask your landlord to do something. They may apply for an anti-social behavior order which could lead to your abusers being evicted.(This most likelly if you are acouncil or social housing tenant but any landlord can apply).

This would certainly seem to indicate that the company has discriminated against you and you could claim compensation. To do so you will need to apply to an Employment Tribunal.

6. As there is age discrimination laws in place now will my boss have to pay me the full National Minimum Wage as I'm only 20?
Unfortunately the answer is no the regulations state that the company is still able to pay different rates to people in the different age groups.

16 - 18
18 - 21
22 and above

However if they try to pay different rates for people doing the same job in the same age band then they will have to have an objective reason for doing so.

For more information about the NMW contact the Low Pay Commission
