Chip and PIN

Have you got your PIN number yet? From 14TH February 2006, you will need to know your pin number in order to be able to use your debit and credit cards.

Your PIN number is a secret four digit number. If you haven’t already got one, you need to ask your bank or building society to send you one.

The only people who are still allowed to sign for transactions are:
a) cardholders awaiting a new chip and PIN card
b) overseas visitors
c) disabled cardholders

But also, not all shops have got chip and PIN technology yet so in these places you might still be asked for a signature.

Your PIN should only be known by you- don’t tell anyone else what it is and never write it down. If you find your original PIN number hard to remember you can change it to something more memorable at a cash machine. However try to avoid combinations like 0000 or 1234 as these could easily be guessed by someone else if they stole your card. Also, remember to be careful when you enter your PIN number that no-one can see it- shield the keypad with your other hand if necessary.

If you forget your PIN you can get a reminder sent to you from your bank. However if you enter your PIN incorrectly three times then your card will become ‘locked’ and you won’t be able to use it. You’ll then need to contact your bank to unlock it.

PIN numbers have been brought in to reduce card fraud, and many people have already been using chip and PIN for several months.
