Cash Cards
Cash cards.
A cash card is the simplest type of card available. They can either be used at the cash machines, or ATMs (automated teller machines) of the bank or building society that you belong to, or over the counter in the branch. You can normally use your cash card in the ATM machines of other banks too, but there may be a small charge for doing so, so check to see if there are any charges if you do, before you try.
A cash card can only be used at a cash machine. You cannot use it to make purchases in shops, over the telephone or on the Internet, and should not be confused with a debit card, which can be used in this way.
When you get your cash card, you will also be sent a Personal Identification Number or ‘PIN’ number. This is normally a four-digit number, which you will need to key in to the ATM machine every time you wish to use your card.
You should always keep your PIN number safe. It is best to memorise it, and destroy the paper on which is sent to you on. If someone else knows what your PIN number is, and they can get access to your card, they can also get access to your money. By keeping your PIN number memorised, you can prevent anyone else finding out what it is, and therefore, prevent someone from stealing your cash.
There is normally a limit on how much you can withdraw each day from a cash machine, but this amount varies depending on the bank, and which type of account you have gone with.
