If you have answered, “yes” to just one of the above questions, then this is a quick introduction to the various benefits that may be available to you.
(Of course, everyone’s circumstances will vary, so unfortunately there are no straightforward rules as to what you are entitled to, but this guide should help you to find out more information. This isn’t an exhaustive list though, and we recommend that you always seek further advice).
The benefit of Benefits.
If you are unemployed, but you are able to work, then you should make an application to claim Job Seekers Allowance. If, on the other hand, you are unemployed but you are unable to work – such as single parents, carers, people who are sick, etc – then you should apply for Income Support.

(If, for any reason, you are not able to claim either of these benefits, then you may be still be able to get some help through the ‘Hardship provision’ – for more information on this, you should contact your local Jobcentre plus, Citizens Advice Bureau, or speak to you Connexions adviser).
If you live in a rented property, then you may be able to get help in paying your rent by claiming Housing Benefit. However, if you need help in meeting your mortgage repayments, then you may be able to get help through Income Support or Income-based Job Seekers Allowance.

You may also be able to get help in paying your Council Tax bills by claiming for Council Tax Benefit.

You can get help in paying for one-off items and expenses for the home, such as a new cooker or essential furniture, by applying for a Budgeting loan from the Social Fund.

You can also use a Budgeting loan to pay for any new clothes, travel costs, or any other items or expenses that may help you look for, or find work.
If you have been unemployed for six months or more, then you can get extra support and training under the New Deal scheme.

While you are claiming Income Support or Job Seekers Allowance, you will also be eligible for the following benefits:
Free NHS Prescriptions Free NHS dental treatment Free NHS sight tests Vouchers towards the cost of glasses or contact lenses
You will also be able to reclaim the cost of travelling to and from hospital for necessary NHS treatment, should you need it.
