Money for School Transport
What is it?
You may qualify for free transport – or financial help with transport – getting to and from school. You may also be entitled to claim a cycling allowance. The Norfolk County Council has a duty to provide this for pupils up to the age of 16, if they consider it necessary to enable the pupil to get to the nearest suitable school.
You are likely to qualify if:
- You have an illness or disability that makes it difficult, or impossible to walk to school.
- You live beyond ‘walking distance’ of the school. Walking distance is defined as two miles for pupils under the age of 8, or three miles for 8 to 16 year olds.
- You live within ‘walking distance’ of the school but, without free transport, you cannot reasonably be expected to get to the school. The Local Education Authority must look at such factors as your age, the safety of the route (e.g. is the route well lit?) and how long you will have to wait for public transport or whether you have any medical or mobility needs.
Where do I apply?
In order to make a claim, you should contact the Norfolk County Council for details on their transport policies. They are legally obliged to publish them annually. The school may also be able to provide you with a copy.
