Maternity Allowance
What is it?
Maternity Allowance is a benefit that is paid if you are expecting a baby, or have just given birth, and do not qualify for Statutory Maternity pay.
In order to claim, you must be expecting the baby in the next 11 weeks, or have just given birth. You cannot be eligible for Statutory Maternity pay, and must not be in paid employment during the 18 week Maternity Allowance period.
In addition to this you should have worked in either full or part-time work for at least 26 weeks, in the 66 weeks immediately before your expected week of childbirth.
How much will I get?
The amount that you could expect to receive if you qualify would be £108.85 a week
You could also claim £36.60 as an additional amount for an adult dependant, so long as you pay toward their maintenance. However, you will not qualify if their earnings in the week prior to your claim are no more than the amount of the addition itself.
How do I apply?
In order to make a claim, you will need to complete the relevant form (MA1).
Where do I apply?
You can pick up an MA1 form from most antenatal clinics, as well as your local Social Security office.
