Guardians Allowance
What is it?
The Guardian’s Allowance is a benefit that is paid to people who are looking after a child whose parents are not around. In order to claim Guardians allowance, you will normally need to be eligible for Child benefit for the child. However, in certain circumstances you may still qualify.
In addition to this, one of the following circumstances must apply.
- Both the child’s parents have died
- One parent has died, and the other cannot be traced
- The child’s parents never married and the Mother has died, and the father has no parental responsibility
- The child’s parents never married and the Mother has died, and the father is unknown
- The surviving parent is in prison, and has at least another 5 years to serve
(Please note that if the child is adopted, the adopted parents count as the parents, not the natural parent.)
How much will I get?
The amount that you can expect to receive if you were to claim Guardians Allowance is £12.50 a week.
How do I apply?
In order to make a claim, you will need to complete form BG1.

You can get a claim pack either through your local Jobcentre plus office, or you can phone the Guardians Allowance Unit on 0845 302 1464.
