Disability Living Allowance for children under the age of 16
What is it?
You can claim the Disability Living Allowance for a child with a severe physical or mental illness or disability if they require more help or looking after than other children of the same age, because of their illness or disability.
If the child is:
- aged 3 months or over and generally needs help or looking after.
- aged 3 years or over and has severe difficulty walking.
- aged 5 years or over and needs extra help getting around out of doors.
then you should claim the Disability Living Allowance.
You can claim Disability Living Allowance before the child is aged 3 months, but the benefit will not be paid before the child reaches 3 months unless they are terminally ill.
How much will I get?
The amounts that you may receive will depend on your individual circumstances, and as a result, the figures below are only a guide. The amount that you actually receive may still differ.
If your child needs looking after, then the amounts that you may receive are:
£53.55 at the higher rate
£35.80 at the middle rate
£14.20 at the lower rate
If your child needs help getting around, then the amounts that you may receive are:
£37.40 at the higher rate
£14.20 at the lower rate
How do I apply?
If you are eligible to claim, then you must claim straight away by contacting your Social Security office. If you delay your claim, you may lose benefit.

Contact your local Jobcentre plus office for a claim form (DLA1A).
