Council Tax Benefit

Council Tax Benefit

What is it?

Council Tax benefit is a means tested benefit, which means that the amount you receive will depend on your individual circumstances, that helps people with no or little income pay for all or part of their council tax bill.

Like Housing Benefit, Council Tax Benefit is paid by the government, but distributed through local authority.

How much will I get?

If you are married or live with a partner only one of you will be eligible. There are certain rules that apply which determine how much Council Tax Benefit you can receive. If you are currently on income support or Jobseekers Allowance you should get the maximum Council Tax Benefit, which is usually the whole cost of your share of the bill. Otherwise the amounts can vary – so speak to an adviser for more details.

In order to receive Council Tax Benefit you must not have more than £16,000.00 in savings, however if you have savings over £3,000.00 this could affect how much benefit you will receive.

You may also receive a Second Adult Rebate (reduction in the bill) if you claim as an individual and have someone else other than a spouse or under 18 year old living with you whose income is low enough. This could be a relative like an adult son or daughter, or a friend. But, if you are claiming as a couple generally no-one with you can count as a second adult unless you are both full time students. Also if you live alone you could be eligible for a reduction in your bill.
