Child Benefit
What is it?
Child benefit is a benefit paid to anyone who is looking after a child under the age of 16 years old (19 provided that they are still in full time education). Benefit is paid for each child, with a higher rate for the eldest eligible child. You do not have to be the child’s parent to get child benefit.
Child benefit is a non-contributory benefit, which means that it is paid out whether you have made sufficient National Insurance Contributions, or not. It is also a tax-free benefit.
How much will I get?
The amounts that you could expect to receive if you were to claim Child benefit would be:
£17.45 a week for the only or eldest eligible child. £11.70 a week for all other children.
If you are a single parent, then you could expect to receive £17.55 for the only or the eldest eligible child.
How do I apply?
In order to make a claim for Child benefit, you will need to fill in a claim form CH2(INT).
