Back to Work Bonus

What is it?

The Back to Work Bonus is a one off payment, of up to £1,000.00 that you can claim if you have been working on a part-time basis while claiming Income Support or Income-based Job Seekers Allowance, and have either found a new full-time job, or as a result of your earnings being increased, you have stopped claiming certain benefits.

In order to receive this payment, you or your partner should have been claiming Income Support or Job Seekers Allowance for at least 91 days. This period of time is known as the ‘waiting period’.

Since the end of the ‘waiting period’, you or your partner should have been receiving less Income Support or Job Seekers Allowance due to receiving an income from a part-time job. This is called the ‘bonus period’.

You bonus will be calculated from the first day of the ‘bonus period’ onwards.

How much will I get?

The minimum bonus that you may receive will be £5.00.
The maximum bonus that you may receive will be £1,000.00.

However, the amount that you will get from the Back to Work Bonus is based on the amount of your part-time earnings from day 92 of your claim for Income Support or Job Seekers Allowance, providing:

You have been getting Income Support or Income-based Job Seekers Allowance.
You have been working for less than 16 hours a week (24 hours a week for your partner).
You have stopped getting benefit because of an increase in the number of hours worked, or the amount earned.

How do I apply?

You can make a claim at anytime from the week before your benefits are due to cease, and up to 12 weeks after it has ceased.

You will need to complete the “Back to Work Bonus claim form” (BTWB1) in order to make your claim.

Where do I apply?

You can get the relevant application form by popping in to the Jobcentre plus office where you had your benefit paid.

Alternatively, you can obtain the form BTWB1 from the Department of Work and Pensions website by logging on to www.dwp.gov.uk, or by clicking the link below.
